Yusuf Buhari, son of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has signalled his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to stakeholders, Yusuf conveyed his decision after wide consultations, describing it as a response to calls from party members and constituents in the late president’s political base in Katsina State.
A recent meeting of APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area endorsed Yusuf as the preferred candidate, citing his “capacity and acceptance” among party faithful. The announcement has, however, triggered divisions within the local APC, with some leaders from Daura and surrounding areas rejecting what they see as an imposition.
The constituency holds deep symbolic importance as the heartland of the Buhari political legacy. The late president, who died in 2025, hailed from Daura and maintained strong influence in the region throughout his political career.
Yusuf’s potential entry into electoral politics comes as the APC grapples with internal power plays and succession battles in Katsina and other northern states. Supporters argue his candidacy could consolidate party unity and leverage the Buhari name to deliver victory, while critics question the emergence of political dynasties in Nigeria’s democracy.
Neither Yusuf Buhari nor the national APC leadership has issued an official statement confirming his formal declaration. Local party sources say further consultations are ongoing amid the emerging cracks over the endorsement.
The development adds to growing speculation about family members of former leaders positioning themselves for office as Nigeria approaches another major election cycle
