Political stakeholders from Nigeria’s North-Central zone have called on President Bola Tinubu to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election, demanding that the position be filled by a candidate from their region.
OBSERVERS TIMES report that these stakeholders have initiated consultations with prominent political figures and former public office holders to advance their aspiration.
A closed-door meeting was held on Saturday with key figures including former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau (retd), the Onah of Abaji, His Royal Highness, Musa Yunusa, and former Senator John Danboyi, among others, to strategize on securing the vice presidency for the North-Central.
Prof. Nghargbu K’tso, Chairman of the North-Central Renaissance Movement and leader of the delegation, released a statement outlining their demands. “The North Central is strengthening advocacy for the return of presidency to the zone come 2027 through high-level consultations with prominent figures in the geo-political zone and Nigeria at large,” the statement read.
“We appealed for the cooperation of Nigerians to make the agitation a reality and put the region in the equation of other zones who have enjoyed the constitutional right of producing president and vice president in Nigeria as the zone has what it takes to lead rather than to be led all the times,” he added.
This move follows a recent announcement by hundreds of stakeholders and party leaders from the North-Central, who declared their unified intention to produce the next president after what they perceive as 65 years of marginalization. The demand to replace Shettima signals a strategic push by the region to assert its political influence and secure a more prominent role in the nation’s leadership.
