Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has pledged that the Igbo ethnic group will deliver over 70% of their votes to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election, citing gratitude for the President’s commitment to developing the South East region.
Speaking at a reception held in his honor in Ntalakwu, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Kalu credited President Tinubu with fulfilling promises made to the Igbo people post-civil war, specifically highlighting the creation of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
“We are promising the President, 70 to 80 percent of votes from Igboland,” Kalu stated. “No other President has remembered the promise made to the Igbo people after the war like President Bola Tinubu.”
He emphasized that Tinubu’s signing of the SEDC bill into law and subsequent funding demonstrated his commitment to the region’s development, where previous administrations had failed to act.
Kalu, who was also bestowed the chieftaincy title of “Dike Eji Aga Mba” (The people’s warrior) by King Larry, traditional ruler of Ntalakwu ancient kingdom, reiterated the South East’s readiness to support the Tinubu administration.
In a separate segment of his address, Kalu condemned alleged attempts by Abia State authorities to restrict traditional rulers from interacting with federal government officials. He cited instances where traditional rulers were reportedly discouraged from attending events promoting President Tinubu.
“Restricting the traditional rulers from coming to welcome those working with the President is not the right leadership that Abia State is looking for,” Kalu asserted. “Those who are threatening the traditional rulers, please, we beg you, allow them the freedom to exercise the mandate of the people.”
He called for political inclusivity and freedom of expression within Abia State.
Emeka Atuma, the host of the event and a former member of the House of Representatives, welcomed the Deputy Speaker and affirmed the growing strength of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.
