Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has shelved the Indigeneship Bill, aimed at fostering national unity and equity for Nigerians living outside their home states, to allow for wider consultations. The decision, announced Tuesday via a statement from Chief Press Secretary Levinus Nwabughiogu, follows feedback from stakeholders and an analysis by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

The Bill, intended to promote inclusivity, raised concerns about potential issues like dual indigeneship. NILDS recommended that state assemblies craft laws to grant settlers equal rights, aligning with constitutional provisions. Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, emphasised a people-centric legislative approach, vowing transparency and inclusivity.

“We are committed to reflecting the aspirations of Nigerians,” Kalu said, urging citizens to engage actively in the ongoing constitutional review to build a fairer, united nation.
