Peter Obi has defended the lengthy screening process conducted by the NDC, describing it as a necessary test of credibility, transparency, and constitutional compliance for aspiring leaders.
Speaking on the exercise late Tuesday, Obi said the screening — which reportedly lasted more than two hours — reflected a commitment to democratic standards and accountability.
“This is democracy in action because NDC chooses to do things properly,” Obi said. “When we say there is going to be screening, it has to be done right.”
The former presidential candidate said Nigerians deserved to know whether political aspirants meet constitutional requirements and possess verifiable credentials to support their claims.
“Nigerians want to know whether you meet the stipulated constitutional qualifications and can provide relevant documents to back them up,” he said.
Obi added that the process was also designed to assess candidates’ vision, integrity, and readiness to address the country’s deepening political and economic challenges.
“This is the way to know whether everything you have said or declared is true and if you can answer questions about your commitment to building a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing public scrutiny of internal party processes and calls for greater transparency in Nigeria’s political system.
