Renowned Nigerian actress and activist, Kate Henshaw, has expressed profound lament over the current state of the nation, declaring that there is “nothing to celebrate” despite Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy.
Speaking on Channels Television’s special Democracy Day programme, Henshaw asserted that Nigeria’s democratic experience holds little meaning for the majority of its citizens, as it has failed to address their fundamental needs.
The actress questioned the utility of prolonged democratic rule when it remains detached from the populace and makes no tangible impact on their lives. “There is no middle class and we cannot tell any more lies to ourselves,” she stated, highlighting the dire condition across all sectors of the economy.
Henshaw painted a grim picture of the country, emphasizing, “Everything around us is crumbling and Nigerians are barely holding on by the skin of their teeth.”
Despite her somber assessment, Henshaw urged Nigerians not to despair, advocating for continued hope and insisting on accountability from governments at all levels. “We cannot keep quiet,” she affirmed, stressing the imperative for justice, equity, and security for the lives and property of the people.
She concluded with a note of optimism, stating, “But I still hold on to hope that we will have a country to live in, for our children — something they can build on.”
