The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of officers filmed counting bundles of cash inside a patrol vehicle marked Area Command Asaba.
The video, which spread widely across social media on Monday, showed the policemen handling large sums of money in their van. The scene sparked outrage among Nigerians, many of whom alleged that the cash was the proceeds of extortion.
Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, Bright Edafe, said in a statement on Tuesday that the officers were quickly tracked down and placed under arrest. He explained that the Commissioner of Police summoned them immediately after the clip came to the attention of the Command.
“The policemen in the embarrassing video have been identified and arrested. They appeared before the CP today,” Edafe announced on X (formerly Twitter).
According to him, two senior officers have already been issued queries, while two inspectors are being held in detention pending an orderly room trial the Force’s internal disciplinary process for erring personnel.
“The four personnel, two of them senior officers, have been queried, while the two inspectors have been detained and are awaiting an orderly room trial,” Edafe added.
The spokesman assured that the Command will impose the necessary sanctions once the disciplinary process is concluded.
