The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, warning that the legislation could undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s future elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s national publicity secretary, described the president’s action as tantamount to signing “the death warrant on credible elections” in the country.
Abdullahi questioned the rapid pace at which Tinubu approved the bill, arguing that it disregarded widespread public objections and raised concerns about potential manipulation of the 2027 elections.
“The speed and manner of this assent suggest a deliberate attempt to tilt the electoral playing field,” the ADC statement said. “It is a direct threat to the democratic process and the citizens’ right to free and fair elections.”
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which was passed by the National Assembly earlier this year, has sparked intense debate among political parties, civil society organisations, and citizens. Critics argue that certain provisions could centralise control over the electoral process, weaken independent oversight, and limit transparency.
The ADC has called for urgent national dialogue and legal scrutiny to ensure that Nigeria’s 2027 elections remain credible and free from undue influence.
