At least 23 people have been killed and 108 others wounded after a series of powerful explosions ripped through multiple locations in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, police have confirmed. The attacks on Monday night struck busy public areas in the insurgency‑hit city, sending shockwaves through a community still scarred by years of militant violence.

Police spokesman Nahum Kenneth Daso told reporters early Tuesday that initial investigations indicate the blasts were likely carried out by suspected suicide bombers. The first explosions hit the Post Office district, followed by the bustling Monday Market and the main entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Emergency responders and security forces were quickly deployed to cordon off the affected sites, evacuate the injured and clear the areas of further threats. Residents described scenes of panic, with many trying desperately to reach medical help amid chaos.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a claim of responsibility. However, analysts say Boko Haram and its faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) — both active in Borno’s long‑running insurgency — remain the leading suspects behind the coordinated attack.

The blasts come as the federal government continues military operations across the northeast, where extremist attacks have surged in recent months, challenging efforts to restore stability in one of Nigeria’s most fragile regions.

Security forces have assured the public that normalcy is returning and that patrols have been intensified to prevent further incidents, even as investigations into the bombings continue.
