We have read reports circulating on social media platforms alleging that a coalition of civil society organisations in Abuja is planning to petition the Executive Chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba, over allegations of gun-running.

These allegations are grave. As watchdogs of society, we have used the past few days to undertake an extensive investigation to ascertain the gravity and reality of the allegations. Our findings indicate that the allegations are untrue, as we found no evidence linking Mr. Kwaghgba to any such activity.

We have also conducted extensive research into the career progression of Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba and discovered that he possesses considerable knowledge and experience in security-related matters, having studied at the Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies and acquired professional certification in security. His wealth of knowledge and experience, among other considerations, culminated in his appointment as Chairman of BIRS.

As part of our responsibility, we also investigated his activities at his present workplace and found that, since assuming office, Mr. Kwaghgba has raised the standard of service delivery at the board. He has improved the board’s internally generated revenue, introduced innovative measures to curb tax leakages, and instituted staff incentives aimed at motivating workers to improve their performance.

As a coalition of civil society organisations, we frown at the activities of a few disgruntled individuals who may be attempting to use the names of civil society organisations to score political points.

We wish to inform the general public that our independent investigation has led us to conclude that Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba is an unsung hero whose achievements and performance have been underreported. He stands out as one of the notable appointees of the Benue State Government under Governor Hyacinth Alia.

We therefore advise Benue politicians to allow Mr. Kwaghgba to focus on his professional responsibilities. He is doing an incredible job and deserves commendation rather than vilification.

In view of the foregoing, we wish to make it clear to the general public that Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba has no link to the allegation being circulated that he is involved in gun-running. We found no evidence to substantiate such a claim.
