In a historic ruling, a judge has sentenced United States President-elect Donald Trump in connection with his hush-money case. This follows Trump’s conviction last May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, although his sentencing had been postponed multiple times.
The court has issued an “unconditional discharge” for Trump, marking a significant moment as it is the first criminal trial involving a former U.S. president. This decision means that Trump, who is set to be sworn in on January 20 after the ratification of his election results, will face no penalties, including jail time or fines.
Justice Juan Merchan stated, “This court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits entry of judgment or conviction without encroaching on the highest office in the land is an unconditional discharge.”
Trump appeared virtually from Florida, expressing his stance by declaring himself “totally innocent.” Despite a last-ditch effort to halt the sentencing, his appeal was dismissed.
As of this report, Trump’s camp has not yet responded to the ruling.
