The trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on charges of alleged N110 billion fraud has commenced in Abuja, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presenting its first witness. Bello, along with two other Kogi State officials, Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, faces a 16-count charge encompassing money laundering, conspiracy, and criminal breach of trust.
Justice Maryann Anenih dismissed objections from the defense regarding the EFCC’s evidence presentation, paving the way for witness testimony. Fabian Nwaora, a real estate businessman and owner of EFAB Property, took the stand, recounting the 2020 sale of a Maitama, Abuja property to Shehu Bello for N550 million. Nwaora further testified that in 2023, Shehu Bello returned the property documents, citing an EFCC investigation into the transaction. Subsequently, Nwaora refunded the N550 million to an EFCC-designated account.
The EFCC’s case centers on allegations that Yahaya Bello misappropriated state funds to acquire numerous properties, including prime real estate in Abuja and luxury apartments in Dubai. The prosecution also alleges substantial transfers of funds to foreign banks, including TD Bank in the United States.
Bello was previously remanded in Kuje prison before being granted bail of N500 million with three sureties. The trial has been adjourned to April 3, 2025. This high-profile case is expected to draw significant public interest as the EFCC attempts to substantiate its claims of large-scale corruption during Bello’s time as governor.
