A Senegalese court has sentenced three prominent TikTok influencers to prison terms for allegedly insulting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The controversial ruling has sparked intense domestic criticism, with human rights advocates warning of a targeted crackdown on free speech and online dissent in the West African nation.
The convictions come at a time of heightened political volatility in Senegal, characterized by a worsening rift within the ruling camp between President Faye and his former political godfather, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
The Convictions and Sentences
The three sentenced content creators are associated with *Feenal Digital*, an online media platform known for broadcasting content sympathetic to Prime Minister Sonko and his party, the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF).
The court handed the most severe sentence to Mandoumbe Diop (popularly known online as Lamignou Darou a high-profile influencer with over 500,000 TikTok followers. Diop was sentenced to three months in prison without the option of a suspension.
His colleagues, Magueye Diaw (Oustaz Thiep) and Moustapha Ndiaye (Ndiaye Touba) were each sentenced to two months in prison without suspension. In addition to their jail terms, the court ordered Diaw and Ndiaye to pay a fine of 500,000 CFA francs (approximately $800 USD) each.
Their defense counsel, Abdy Nar Ndiaye, strongly criticized the prosecution, arguing that his clients’ videos were lighthearted political satire and comedy that did not warrant criminal prosecution.
“These were comedic skits, not criminal offenses,” Ndiaye argued, lamenting the criminalization of online satire.
Political analysts believe the arrests are inextricably linked to the escalating proxy war between President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko.
Once inseparable allies who swept to power in a wave of popular youth support, the relationship between the two leaders has rapidly deteriorated. The friction culminated recently when President Faye quietly launched his own political movement, a move widely interpreted as a bid to distance himself from Sonko’s dominant influence within PASTEF.
Feenal Digital, which officially describes itself as an online platform promoting governmental and private-sector initiatives, has increasingly become a digital battleground. Influencers on the platform have routinely used humor and commentary to navigate the tense political climate, often drawing the ire of state authorities.
The sentencing has reignited fears that the new administration is adopting the same heavy-handed tactics against critics that characterized the previous government under Macky Sall.
