Manchester City is set to welcome Claudio Echeverri to their squad next month, following the completion of his loan spell at River Plate in Argentina. The deal, reportedly worth £12.5m plus add-ons, was secured by City last January when Echeverri had just turned 18. Despite being eligible to move to Manchester immediately, it was decided that he would benefit more from staying in familiar surroundings to continue his development in 2024.
After wrapping up his loan stint with River Plate at the end of the Argentine club season in November, Echeverri enjoyed a brief break before gearing up for international duty. The 19-year-old is expected to represent Argentina in the upcoming South American Under-20 Championship in Venezuela, with plans in place for him to join City once the tournament concludes.
Argentina, alongside football powerhouses Brazil and Uruguay, are among the top contenders for the championship which kicks off on 23 January and ends on 16 February. The tournament also serves as a qualifying event for the Under-20 World Cup later in the year, a competition Echeverri hopes to feature in if Argentina secures a spot.
Having amassed 41 appearances for River Plate in 2024, Echeverri will bring fresh talent to a City squad that is undergoing a transition phase under manager Pep Guardiola. With several key players nearing or over the age of 30, Echeverri symbolizes the new era that Guardiola aims to usher in with a major rebuild project.
As Guardiola calls for activity in the upcoming winter transfer window, Echeverri is expected to join a list of elite midfield candidates being considered for reinforcement at City.
