China has announced plans to accelerate the implementation of zero-tariff access for a wide range of Nigerian exports, a move expected to boost bilateral trade and open new opportunities for Africa’s largest economy.
The development, revealed under a new trade facilitation framework between both countries, is aimed at expanding Nigeria’s access to the vast Chinese market, particularly for agricultural produce, solid minerals, and value-added goods.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, Beijing is working closely with Abuja to identify priority export products that will benefit from the tariff waiver, streamline customs processes, and remove technical barriers that have previously slowed down Nigeria’s export penetration.
Chinese authorities say the initiative is part of their broader commitment to deepen economic ties with African nations and support industrial growth across the continent. For Nigeria, the arrangement is expected to enhance foreign exchange earnings, strengthen non-oil exports, and create jobs in key sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.
Trade experts note that Nigeria has long sought greater access to China’s multi-trillion-dollar consumer market, but high tariffs, stringent quality standards, and limited processing capacity have hindered export growth. The new fast-track scheme could significantly ease these constraints.
Government officials in Abuja have welcomed the move, describing it as a “timely step” that aligns with Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda. They added that the country is working to ramp up production capacity to fully leverage the opportunity.
The zero-tariff policy is expected to come into effect shortly after both nations conclude technical assessments and finalise operational guidelines, signalling a new phase of enhanced trade cooperation between Nigeria and China.
