Nigeria’s apex bank has issued a fresh warning against the abuse and defacing of the national currency as Valentine’s Day celebrations gather momentum across the country.
In a public advisory, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cautioned individuals against spraying, mutilating or mishandling the naira in the name of romance, stressing that such acts remain punishable under Nigerian law.
The directive was discussed on Arise 360, where media personality Seyitan Atigarin and content creator The Man CJ examined the growing trend of currency spraying during intimate celebrations, including Valentine’s Day outings and proposals.
Speaking during the programme, the presenters highlighted that while Valentine’s Day is often marked by extravagant gestures, the CBN insists that defacing banknotes — whether at weddings, parties or romantic dinners — undermines the dignity of the national currency.
Under existing regulations, anyone found guilty of abusing the naira risks fines or imprisonment, the bank warned.
The renewed caution comes amid rising public concern over social practices that involve stepping on or spraying cash, a custom that has become commonplace at private and public events.
The CBN urged Nigerians to express affection in lawful ways, reminding the public that preserving the integrity of the naira is a collective responsibility.
