The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the 299th meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) using four languages: Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin. The MPC meeting, now scheduled for February 18-19 (having been rescheduled from February 17-18), is a key event that shapes Nigeria’s economic trajectory.
The CBN shared the announcement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, demonstrating its commitment to reaching a broader audience. The messages read:

  • Pidgin: “Korret Informate, 299th MPC, Committee for Moni mata #MPC”
This announcement comes as Nigeria’s economic activity shows signs of expansion. The CBN recently reported that the composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for January 2025 reached 50.2, indicating growth for the second consecutive month.
  • The industrial sector saw improvement, while the agricultural sector continued its expansion. However, the services sector contracted slightly.
