Tributes have poured in across Nigeria’s football community following the death of former Super Eagles interim coach, Monday Sinclair. He passed away at the age of 88, marking the end of a storied career that spanned decades and shaped some of the nation’s finest football talents.

Confirmation of his death came on Wednesday from former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, who played under Sinclair at Sharks FC and considered him a lifelong mentor.

“Our daddy is gone. What a man,” Peterside wrote in a heartfelt tribute shared on Facebook. “He signed me to play for Sharks. Gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna.”

Recalling their first encounter, Peterside added, “The first day he saw me come to train with Sharks, he said, ‘My friend, are you a boxer?’ He said I was built like Tyson. From that day, I found me a football father.”

Sinclair’s career began as a player with the Green Eagles in the 1960s, an era in which he earned respect for his discipline and leadership on the pitch. After hanging up his boots, he transitioned into coaching first with the now-defunct Sharks FC of Rivers State, then moving on to lead Niger Tornadoes, Enugu Rangers, and Bayelsa United.

In 1997, he stepped into the role of interim coach for the Super Eagles during a turbulent period for Nigerian football. He would later serve as head coach of Equatorial Guinea’s national team, further expanding his coaching footprint across West Africa.

Renowned for his keen eye for talent, Sinclair played a key role in discovering and nurturing players who would go on to become Nigerian football icons. His mentorship helped shape the careers of Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah, among others.

Despite his later international roles, Sinclair remained grounded in grassroots football, often returning to local academies and clubs to offer guidance to young players. Many in Nigeria’s football scene credit him for laying the foundation that enabled their careers to flourish.

His death comes just days after the passing of another football great, Peter Rufai, amplifying the sense of loss within the sports community.
