Joe Kent, the Director of the United States National Counterterrorism Centre, has resigned from his position, publicly breaking with the Trump administration over its military engagement with Iran.

In a statement posted to X on Tuesday, Kent announced his immediate resignation, arguing that the conflict with Iran was unnecessary and alleging it was instigated under pressure from foreign allies.

“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” Kent wrote. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Kent’s resignation marks a rare public defection within the administration regarding foreign policy. In his statement, he sought to distinguish between President Trump’s current trajectory and the approach of his first term.

Addressing the President directly, Kent expressed admiration for Trump’s previous foreign policy record, which he argued successfully avoided prolonged Middle Eastern entanglements.

“Until June of 2025, you understood that the wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation,” Kent stated.

He praised the President’s first-term actions against terrorist and military targets, adding, “You demonstrated this by killing Qasem Soleimani and by defeating ISIS.”

Kent concluded by reaffirming his support for the “values and the foreign policies that you campaigned on in 2016, 2020, [and] 2024,” implicitly contrasting those principles with the administration’s current stance on Iran.

The White House has not yet issued a response to Kent’s resignation or his allegations regarding external influence on US military policy.
