Breaking: Senate Panel Clears Three Non-Career Ambassadorial Nominee

The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has approved three non-career ambassadorial nominees forwarded by President Bola Tinubu, clearing a critical hurdle for their confirmation as Nigeria’s envoys abroad. The decision marks a significant step in filling diplomatic posts that have remained vacant for over two years.

The nominees Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are from Ogun State, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State were recommended for approval following a comprehensive screening hearing on Tuesday. According to reports, the committee found each possessed the requisite qualifications, experience, and character for high diplomatic office.

The three nominees bring a combined wealth of experience in security and foreign policy. Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are is a retired Colonel and former Director-General of the State Security Service (DSS), offering deep expertise in national security matters. Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu is a seasoned diplomat who previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Korea. Completing the trio is Emmanuel Ayodele Oke, a former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) who also represented Nigeria at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

These individuals were first nominated by President Tinubu on 26 November 2025, representing the administration’s initial batch of non-career ambassadorial appointments. Their screening and subsequent clearance by the committee address a diplomatic gap created by the recall of ambassadors in 2023, which left numerous strategic posts unfilled.

This clearance is part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle that involves over sixty additional nominees, including several high-profile figures. As the Senate prepares for a full confirmation vote, these selections underscore an evolving foreign policy approach that prioritizes a blend of intelligence expertise and traditional diplomatic experience.

The appointments are poised to strengthen Nigeria’s representation in key international postings at a crucial time for the nation’s global engagement.
