Lagos, Nigeria – Lagos State House of Assembly members today impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions. Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has assumed the role.
This action follows recent media reports, including those by The Gazette, which detailed the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for lawmaker vehicles and other questionable expenditures under Mr. Obasa’s leadership.
Mr. Obasa, who first became Speaker in 2015, has faced repeated accusations of fraud and political thuggery throughout his tenure. Previous investigations by The Gazette and Sahara Reporters revealed alleged diversions of Lagos funds to his personal entities.
While the EFCC initiated inquiries based on these reports, Mr. Obasa denied all wrongdoing, and no formal charges were filed.
More details to follow shortly.
