The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Anambra State Governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in a development confirmed on Tuesday.
Ngige’s media aide, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, clarified that the former governor has not been kidnapped — contrary to earlier social-media rumours — but is “currently with operatives of the EFCC.”
As of now, neither the EFCC nor Ngige’s camp has released details regarding the alleged offences or the nature of the investigation.
Ngige previously came under public scrutiny after armed assailants attacked his convoy, though he escaped unhurt. That violent incident had stoked concerns over security and raised speculation about possible motives for renewed scrutiny.
The arrest is likely to attract widespread attention given Ngige’s long record in public service — both as a state governor and federal minister — and his continued influence in political circles. I will monitor for updates on the reasons for his detention and any charges filed against him.
