Tension has gripped Onitsha after operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade) allegedly opened fire on traders at the Onitsha Main Market, killing four people, including a pregnant woman.
The incident occurred on Tuesday along Bright Street, opposite First Bank, when the task force stormed the market to confiscate traders’ goods.
Eyewitnesses said the move was resisted by the traders, sparking a violent confrontation. In the ensuing chaos, the operatives reportedly fired live rounds at close range, hitting unarmed civilians.
“One of the operatives started shooting directly at people. Two died instantly, and others were left in critical condition,” an eyewitness posted on Facebook.
The alleged killings have triggered outrage across the city, with residents demanding immediate accountability from the state government and security agencies.
