Technology billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates has acknowledged having extramarital affairs during his marriage but firmly denied any involvement in the criminal activities of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In a recent statement addressing longstanding public scrutiny, Gates described his past association with Epstein as a “serious error in judgement” while stressing that he had no knowledge of, or participation in, Epstein’s crimes.

“I made mistakes in my personal life, and I take responsibility for them,” Gates said, referring to affairs that contributed to the breakdown of his marriage to Melinda French Gates. “But I had no involvement whatsoever in Epstein’s criminal conduct.”

Epstein, a financier with connections to powerful figures in politics, business and academia, was arrested in 2019 on federal charges related to sex trafficking of minors. He died later that year in a New York jail while awaiting trial. His case triggered global scrutiny of his associates and renewed questions about the extent of his network.

Gates has previously acknowledged meeting Epstein on several occasions, primarily in connection with philanthropic discussions. However, he has repeatedly maintained that those meetings were limited in scope and that he severed ties after concluding that Epstein’s behaviour and reputation were incompatible with his work.

The renewed attention comes amid continuing public debate about accountability among high-profile figures linked socially or professionally to Epstein. While several individuals have faced investigations or legal consequences, no evidence has emerged implicating Gates in criminal wrongdoing.

The former Microsoft chief, who stepped down from the board of Microsoft in 2020, remains active in global health and development initiatives through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Observers say the episode highlights the reputational risks associated with elite networks and the enduring public demand for transparency from influential figures.

Gates has reiterated that he regrets the meetings and the controversy that followed, but insists that allegations tying him to Epstein’s crimes are “categorically false.”
