Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced deep concern over the continued detention of former Nasir El-Rufai, following the refusal of the Federal High Court to review bail conditions that his supporters describe as practically impossible to meet.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Atiku said the prolonged detention raises serious questions about the protection of fundamental rights and the administration of justice in Nigeria. He argued that bail conditions should not be so restrictive as to effectively deny an accused person the constitutional right to liberty.

The former vice president urged the authorities and the judiciary to uphold the principles of fairness, due process and the rule of law, stressing that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.

Atiku warned that actions perceived as politically motivated or inconsistent with constitutional guarantees could erode public confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions, calling for an impartial and transparent judicial process in the handling of El-Rufai’s case.
