Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline, is stepping up its commitment to youth employment by offering 1,000 new job opportunities for fresh graduates. The airline has unveiled this new initiative as part of its Graduate Trainee Programme for 2025/2026.

This move comes on the heels of the recent suspension by the Federal Government of the controversial 4% Free on Board (FOB) levy, which had stirred significant unrest among key sectors, particularly manufacturers, importers, and customs agents. The levy, which was introduced by the Nigerian Customs Service, raised concerns that it would further fuel inflation and hinder trade competitiveness.

In response to these concerns, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, acknowledged the potential negative impact of the levy on Nigeria’s business environment, particularly on trade facilitation and economic stability. He announced the suspension, recognizing the widespread opposition from critical stakeholders who feared its adverse effects.

Air Peace’s Chairman, Allen Onyema, applauded the government’s swift action and underscored its positive effect on the aviation industry. “This suspension is a lifeline for the aviation sector,” Onyema remarked. “It removes a heavy burden that could have crippled airlines and led to massive job losses. Air Peace is committed to giving back by creating 1,000 new jobs for young Nigerians.”

He emphasized the importance of public-private sector collaborations in fostering economic growth, adding that if further supportive measures like this are introduced, they could pave the way for thousands of new jobs in the aviation industry. “This is how partnerships can transform a nation,” Onyema said.

The Graduate Trainee Programme is designed to provide recent graduates with essential skills, mentorship, and hands-on experience in the aviation sector. Onyema explained, “It serves as a strategic pipeline for developing a competent workforce to support the continued growth of the sector.”

To qualify for the programme, applicants must be 30 years old or younger and possess a minimum of Second Class Lower (2:2) in any discipline from a recognized university. A NYSC discharge certificate or exemption letter is also required, along with a strong desire to learn and adaptability.
