Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has criticised prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over his emotional reaction to a recent United States airstrike, questioning the basis of the cleric’s public outcry.
In a post Adeyanju challenged Gumi’s stance following the airstrike, asking pointedly: “Why the tears?” His remarks appeared to reference a video and comments attributed to the cleric, in which Gumi reportedly condemned the incident and expressed sympathy for those affected.
Adeyanju argued that Gumi’s reaction was selective and inconsistent, noting that the cleric had not shown similar empathy in past situations involving violence perpetrated by armed groups within Nigeria.
The activist’s criticism has sparked fresh debate on social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on the contrasting positions of both men regarding security, foreign intervention, and national accountability.
As discussions continue to unfold, neither Gumi nor his spokesperson has issued an official response to Adeyanju’s remarks.
