A chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has predicted deep internal cracks within the party following its forthcoming national convention, asserting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is certain to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.
Baba-Ahmed said the outcome of the convention would trigger discontent and defections, as rival blocs within the party struggle to come to terms with Atiku’s anticipated victory. According to him, the ADC’s internal dynamics and delegate structure are already tilted in favour of the former vice president, leaving little room for surprises.
Speaking during a political discussion, Baba-Ahmed argued that while Atiku’s experience and national profile could strengthen the party’s electoral chances, the process of securing the ticket would come at a cost. He warned that unresolved grievances among party leaders and aspirants could weaken the ADC ahead of the next general election.
“The party will bleed after the convention because the ticket is effectively settled,” he said, adding that managing post-primary reconciliation would be a major test for the ADC leadership.
Baba-Ahmed urged the party to prioritise unity and internal democracy to prevent a wave of exits that could undermine its credibility as a viable opposition force. He noted that opposition parties often struggle not at the point of winning tickets, but in maintaining cohesion afterwards.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity as opposition parties position themselves for the next electoral cycle, with alliances, defections and internal contests expected to intensify in the coming months.
