MTN Nigeria has urged subscribers to disable automatic downloads and restrict background data usage to curb rapid data consumption.

The telecommunications company also advised users to lower video streaming quality and review their phone settings to prevent their data bundles from running out quickly.

Mike Ndukwe, MTN Nigeria’s general manager of network performance and quality assurance, gave the advice at the company’s Data on Trial event in Abuja on Monday.

Ndukwe said subscribers could reduce unnecessary data consumption by adjusting how applications operate on their devices, particularly those that download content automatically or continue using the internet in the background.

Automatic downloads, background application activity and high-quality video streaming can consume significant amounts of data, even when users are not actively browsing.

Restricting these activities, the company advised, could help subscribers make their data bundles last longer.

The advice comes amid concerns among mobile internet users about how quickly data allowances are depleted.

Subscribers can manage their consumption by disabling automatic media downloads on messaging applications, limiting background data access for selected apps and reducing video resolution on streaming platforms.

Users can also monitor their data usage through their phone settings to identify applications consuming unusually large amounts of data.

MTN’s recommendations focus on helping subscribers manage their internet consumption through device settings rather than relying solely on purchasing additional data bundles.

The company’s comments were made at its Data on Trial event, where network performance and data consumption were discussed.
