Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Monday visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda, warning that ethnic hatred and divisive rhetoric pose grave dangers to national stability.
Shaibu, who is on a five-day official visit to Rwanda, toured the mass graves housing the remains of about 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
In a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, the Army Headquarters said the visit serves as a vital lesson for Nigeria on the need for peaceful coexistence and early conflict prevention.
The army urged Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divides, reject hate speech, and embrace patriotism to avert conflict.
“The visit highlights the crucial role of responsible leadership and sustained civil-military cooperation in building enduring peace,” the statement added.
