Kano State Police have invited a chieftain of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, over the alleged display of a firearm during a recent political gathering.

A trending online video captured the politician openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump‑action rifle at the event.

In a statement on Monday, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the act constituted a clear violation of the Firearms Act. The police said the unlawful display was capable of inciting fear, intimidating the public and amounted to a breach of public peace and security.

“On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the said Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano,” the statement said. “He is currently at the Command’s State Intelligence Department (SID) and investigation is in progress.

“We will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of the person involved,” the statement added.

The police urged the public, particularly political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders, to conduct themselves peacefully and to abide strictly by the provisions of the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act and other extant laws.

“All political activities must be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law,” the statement concluded.

Unlawful display of dangerous weapons at political gatherings and rallies, including those organised by state actors, has been frequently reported.
