The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North, Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has urged traditional rulers and voters to reject any governorship candidate who is too busy to pick up their phone or respond to messages.
In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, the monarch argued that politicians who intentionally distance themselves from the people they seek to lead do not deserve their support at the polls. According to him, a candidate who is inaccessible during the campaign period will only become a “ghost” once in office.
Oba Akinyemi warned that when public office holders become incommunicado, it destroys public trust, fuels the spread of fake news, and breeds suspicion of corruption. He noted that silence from leaders is often interpreted by the masses as a sign of secrecy or a lack of accountability, which eventually leads to a breakdown in governance.
“The habit of responding to calls and messages is a fundamental responsibility of any public servant,” the Eselu stated. “Any candidate who makes himself unreachable now does not deserve the votes of Ogun traditional rulers or the citizens of this state, regardless of their social status.”
The monarch further explained that keeping the electorate at arm’s length allows opponents to hijack the narrative and creates an environment where crises can easily escalate. He stressed that political legitimacy is built on connection, and any leader who ignores the cries of the people has lost the right to lead them.
Offering his “candid advice” to fellow traditional rulers, chiefs, and civil society groups, Oba Akinyemi insisted that the 2027 elections must serve as a turning point.
“We must use our votes to teach these politicians a lesson. If they cannot answer your calls today when they are looking for your support, they will certainly shut their gates against you tomorrow,” he added.
The monarch concluded by urging voters to prioritize accessibility and character over empty promises, noting that the development of Ogun State depends on leaders who are truly accountable to the people.
