The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has approved the resumption of work at the Gombe State House of Assembly complex project.

The development follows the council’s investigation into the collapse of the reinforced concrete entrance canopy.

The canopy collapsed on July 24, when workers were placing fresh concrete on the structure.

Okorie Uche, national registrar, COREN, said this while presenting the investigative panel’s report on Saturday in Gombe.

Mr Uche said the investigation established that the consulting structural engineer engaged on the project was qualified, but failed to engage registered professionals, including engineers and architects.

He said findings showed that while the structural designs were checked and sealed by the consulting engineer, the working drawings had not been approved by the relevant state authorities.

The official said tests conducted on the concrete and reinforcement indicated that the standing structure was technically adequate.

“The panel identified deficiencies in the temporary formwork and construction sequence as possible factors responsible for the collapse.

“The findings revealed that the concrete was cast at once rather than in stages,” he said.

Mr Uche said the panel, based on its findings, recommended continuation of construction work subject to adequate supervision by qualified professionals.

Receiving the report, Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau commended the panel for a thorough investigation and assured implementation of its recommendations.

Mr Jatau said that anyone found responsible for the incident could be held accountable.

He said that work on the project would resume under strict professional supervision.

Also, Isyaka Lawal, chairman of the panel, said the investigation lasted two months because of the time required to clear debris from the collapsed structure.

He said the report would prevent a recurrence and strengthen professional standards in project execution in the state.
