Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani has described the country’s 66 years of independence as a story of resilience, saying Nigeria has survived the numerous challenges and crises that have confronted it since gaining independence.
Sani, who made the remarks in a message marking Nigeria’s Independence Day on Thursday, said the country had endured difficult periods throughout its history but continued to remain united as a nation.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. Since then, the country has experienced political instability, a civil war, military rule, economic difficulties and other national challenges.
Despite these difficulties, Sani said Nigeria had continued to survive, highlighting the resilience of the country and its people.
His remarks came as Nigerians across the country marked the 66th anniversary of independence, with messages from political leaders, public figures and organisations reflecting on the country’s journey and future.
The anniversary has also renewed discussions about Nigeria’s progress since independence, the challenges facing its citizens and the need to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
Sani’s message centred on resilience and the country’s ability to overcome the difficulties it has encountered over the past six decades.
Nigeria has survived 66 years of challenges. The enduring question now is what the next chapter of the nation’s journey will bring.
