Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has explained why Ademola Lookman struggled to make a significant impact in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener.
Lookman started the Group L encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday but was unable to influence the game as expected before being substituted for Tolu Arokodare with 21 minutes remaining. (Daily Post)
Chelle said Madagascar’s deep defensive approach made it difficult for Nigeria to penetrate through the middle, requiring the Super Eagles to make greater use of the flanks before attempting to create openings centrally.
“We played between the lines and they have to feel when they have to go from the side and when they have to go inside,” Chelle said after the match. (The Sun Nigeria)
The coach explained that against a low defensive block, Nigeria needed to move the ball from one side to another several times to create gaps.
“Once you are playing against a low block, you have to pass by the side, go to the left, go to the right, and after three or four times you can find a pass inside,” he said.
Chelle added that opponents often analyse Nigeria’s style of play closely, making it necessary for the players to find solutions during matches.
“This is the game project. Sometimes we play this kind of team, they know, they analyse you, so we have to find a solution,” he said.
Nigeria initially lined up in a 4-4-2 formation before switching to 4-2-3-1 as the match progressed, with Lookman operating between the lines.
Madagascar took a 16th-minute lead through Ehsan Kari, but debutant George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time after being set up by Alex Iwobi.
Moses Usor then completed Nigeria’s comeback in the 65th minute, scoring on his Super Eagles debut to secure three points for Chelle’s side. (Hack Inti)
