Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), three months after resigning from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal was received into the NDC on Tuesday by the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC), according to reports.
His move marks a fresh shift in his political alignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Lawal had left the ADC in June following a dispute over the party’s presidential primary, which produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate. He alleged that the process was manipulated, a claim that was rejected by Atiku’s camp.
The former SGF’s decision to join the NDC comes after he had initially said he had ruled out the party as one of the political platforms he would support in 2027.
NDC officials said Lawal was received on behalf of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The development adds another high-profile political figure to the NDC as opposition realignments continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
