In Bauchi on Sunday, Abdul’aziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, cautioned Northerners against insisting that the presidency must return to the North in the upcoming general elections.
Yari gave the warning while speaking to a group of prominent Islamic scholars at the home of the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi. The meeting was part of the APC campaign council’s continued consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the elections.
The delegation had earlier visited Jos, Plateau State, to condole with Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir over the death of the JIBWIS National Treasurer, and also held other stakeholder meetings across the country.
In Bauchi, Yari said that claiming only a Northerner should rule Nigeria would divide the country. He argued that Nigeria’s unity is strengthened when leaders emerge from different regions, and he supported a rotational arrangement where a Northern President is followed by a Southern President. He urged Nigerians to back a leadership system that promotes national unity and allows different parts of the country to produce the President.
Also speaking, the APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar, told the clerics that President Tinubu respected the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and had visited Bauchi to console his followers after his death. He called on Bauchi residents to re-elect Tinubu and support the APC at all levels, describing the late scholar as a respected voice of wisdom and guidance.
