Isaac Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, has alleged that five governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform are secretly supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Sunday, Fayose said the governors would not publicly endorse the opposition because they remain APC members, but had promised financial backing for NDC operations in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State to counter the influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
“We now have five APC governors supporting NDC in this election. They’re not going to come out to campaign for us. They’re not going to say anything in public that will favour us, but under it they promise to sponsor this election,” Fayose said. He added that the governors had offered N200,000 to polling agents in each polling unit in the two areas “to help protect the NDC’s votes against alleged manipulation.”
Fayose accused the governors of seeking to prevent Wike from securing victories for the APC in the FCT and Rivers State, and said their identities were being kept confidential because of their APC membership.
The APC Governors’ Forum, however, has said its members will not support any arrangement that could weaken the party or undermine President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. Forum chairman and Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma said after a closed-door meeting in Abuja that governors would not participate in or endorse alliances that could adversely affect APC candidates.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.
Fayose’s assertions come amid growing political realignments and tensions within the APC ahead of 2027. The NDC has intensified preparations for the presidential contest: National Publicity Secretary Osa Director recently said the party’s candidate, Peter Obi, would beat President Tinubu by a wider margin in Lagos than in 2023 if the election is free and fair. The NDC’s Lagos Central senatorial candidate, Ladipo Johnson, said the party had strengthened its base through alliances but identified voter intimidation, harassment and vote‑buying as potential challenges.
The allegations by Fayose were not independently verified at the time of publication. The APC Governors’ Forum and the governors named in the claim did not respond to requests for comment.
