The Kaduna State Government has approved ₦300 million in allowances for academic staff as it moves to address concerns surrounding the ongoing industrial dispute involving the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The approval comes as the government opens talks with university authorities and ASUU representatives in an effort to resolve the issues that have disrupted academic activities.
The funding is expected to support the payment of outstanding allowances and ease some of the financial pressures facing academic staff.
Officials said the discussions would focus on finding a sustainable resolution to the dispute while protecting the interests of students and ensuring the continuity of academic programmes.
ASUU has repeatedly raised concerns over working conditions, funding and the implementation of agreements with government authorities, issues which have contributed to recurring disputes in Nigeria’s university system.
The Kaduna government said it was committed to constructive engagement with the union and other stakeholders to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar.
