Former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has said no successful military coup in Nigeria’s history was carried out without some form of civilian involvement or support.
Babangida, popularly known as IBB, made the remark in an interview with Badeggi 90.1 FM in Minna, Niger State, as part of activities marking his 85th birthday on Monday.
According to THISDAY, the former military ruler said civilians had played a significant role in the country’s military interventions, challenging the perception that coups were solely the work of military officers.
“No coup succeeded in Nigeria without civilian support,” Babangida said during the interview.
Nigeria has experienced several military coups and counter-coups since independence in 1960, resulting in prolonged periods of military rule and significant political upheaval.
Babangida himself came to power in August 1985 after overthrowing the military government of Major General Muhammadu Buhari. He ruled Nigeria until August 1993, when he stepped aside following mounting political pressure over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
His latest comments come as he reflects on his military and political career ahead of his 85th birthday, with the former military president remaining a prominent and often-debated figure in Nigeria’s political history.
