At least four Nigerian soldiers are feared dead after suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched a major attack on Kebbe town in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attackers reportedly stormed the town on Friday, engaging security personnel in a prolonged gun battle before raiding parts of the community.
Local reports said the assailants also looted shops, seized mobile phones and motorcycles and damaged vehicles at the Kebbe General Hospital.
The attack triggered panic among residents, with many reportedly fleeing the area as the gun battle continued.
The number of attackers involved remains unclear, although one report said more than 300 suspected Lakurawa fighters were involved in the assault.
Police authorities have confirmed that an attack occurred but said casualty figures had yet to be verified. The Nigerian Army has also not officially confirmed the reported deaths of the four soldiers.
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over Lakurawa’s activities in north-western Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto and neighbouring Kebbi State.
The group has been linked to a series of deadly attacks in the region, including an ambush in Sokoto in May in which several soldiers were feared killed.
Security forces have previously carried out operations against Lakurawa fighters in Sokoto, with the Army reporting the killing of suspected members of the group during clashes in Tangaza Local Government Area.
Authorities have yet to provide a full account of the latest attack, including the confirmed number of casualties among security personnel and civilians.
Further details are expected as security agencies assess the situation and continue efforts to track the attackers.
