The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified about 2,000 polling units across Osun State as potential flashpoints for violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, as preparations intensify for the crucial poll.
The Chairman of INEC, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this while addressing stakeholders, assuring voters that the commission, in collaboration with security agencies, has put in place measures to guarantee a peaceful, credible and transparent electoral process.
Amupitan said the identification of the polling units followed extensive risk assessments and intelligence reports aimed at preventing violence and electoral malpractice during the election.
He explained that security personnel would be strategically deployed to the affected locations to maintain law and order, protect voters and electoral officials, and ensure that eligible citizens exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.
The INEC chairman urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and refrain from actions capable of undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
He also appealed to residents of the state to cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activities that could threaten the peaceful conduct of the election.
Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to delivering a free, fair and credible governorship election, stressing that every eligible voter would be given the opportunity to cast their ballot in a secure environment.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to hold on August 15, with security agencies and electoral authorities stepping up efforts to prevent violence and safeguard the democratic process across the state.
