The Nigerian Army has launched a manhunt for a soldier, Private Mohammed Yusuf Amutu, following his alleged involvement in the illegal sale and supply of military uniforms and tactical accoutrements to terrorists and criminal gangs.
Amutu, who was attached to the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory, reportedly absconded from his duty post on June 3, 2026, after initial security investigations directly linked him to the illicit trade.
Confirming the development in an official statement on Thursday, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, Major Oluwatope Aluko, revealed that the fleeing soldier has been formally declared wanted by military authorities.
“Consequently, he has been declared wanted by the appropriate military authorities, while intensive efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him to face a full investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with extant military laws,” Major Aluko stated.
Zero Tolerance for Sabotage
The Army spokesperson emphasized that the Ordnance Corps maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding personnel misconduct, indiscipline, or any insider threat capable of compromising national security and operational integrity.
Major Aluko warned that any military personnel found aiding non-state actors—whether through the unauthorized sale, diversion, or distribution of controlled military items—would face the full wrath of both military court-martials and civil legislation.
The illegal procurement of genuine military attire by insurgent groups and armed bandits has long posed a severe challenge to internal security operations across Nigeria, often allowing criminal elements to disguise themselves, mount illegal checkpoints, and ambush unsuspecting citizens and security forces.
Call for Public Assistance
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, internal accountability, and the protection of national assets, the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps appealed to members of the public to assist security agencies in bringing the fugitive to justice.
Citizens with credible information regarding Private Amutu’s whereabouts are urged to immediately report to the nearest military formation, police station, or security agency. Military authorities reassured the public that robust internal control measures are being strengthened to prevent future occurrences and ensure complete institutional accountability.
