A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has admitted the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, to bail in the sum of N100 million, marking a significant development in his ongoing corruption prosecution.
Justice Peter Kekemeke granted the bail application on Wednesday following arguments presented by Umar’s counsel, Sunday Edward, who urged the court to release his client pending the determination of the case.
The court also outlined the conditions attached to the bail, while proceedings in the matter are expected to continue on a later date as the prosecution presses ahead with the allegations against the former tribunal chairman.
Umar, who once headed the Code of Conduct Tribunal — the body responsible for trying public officials accused of breaching Nigeria’s code of conduct laws — is facing corruption-related charges in a case that has attracted widespread public attention due to his former role in Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture.
The ruling allows the former CCT chairman to remain out of custody while standing trial, underscoring the constitutional principle that every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
The case is expected to test the prosecution’s evidence as the court proceeds with hearing the allegations in the coming weeks.
