A prominent political analyst, Mahmud Jega, has urged President Bola Tinubu to publicly distance himself from what he described as an increasing pattern of judicial actions targeting opposition political parties, warning that the trend could erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Jega argued that the president’s silence over recent court rulings and legal disputes involving opposition parties risks fuelling perceptions of political interference in the judiciary. He called on Tinubu to unequivocally reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence and a level political playing field.

According to the analyst, safeguarding the credibility of democratic institutions is essential to ensuring free, fair and transparent elections, stressing that any perception of selective justice could heighten political tensions and undermine the country’s democratic progress as preparations for the 2027 polls gather pace.
