Nigeria’s communications regulator is seeking presidential support for the establishment of local smartphone manufacturing plants, in a move aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imported devices, creating jobs and strengthening the digital economy.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said government backing would be crucial in attracting investment from global smartphone manufacturers to set up production facilities in Nigeria.

The initiative is expected to lower the cost of smartphones, improve access to digital services and accelerate the country’s drive towards greater local content in the technology sector.

The commission believes domestic production could also conserve foreign exchange, deepen technology transfer and position Nigeria as a regional hub for smartphone manufacturing.

Industry stakeholders say the success of the plan will depend on sustained government incentives, reliable infrastructure, favourable policies and a stable business environment capable of attracting international manufacturers.
