The Lagos State Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of suspected illicit drugs in the Surulere area of the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, who disclosed this to journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the seizure.
The suspects—identified as Chinedu David, 29; Ezeagwu Chukwuma, 38; and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45—were apprehended on Saturday night by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit. They were transporting the consignment in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.
According to the police chief, preliminary investigations revealed that the military uniforms were destined for the South-East.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine the source, ownership, and intended recipients of the recovered items, as well as establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement and identify other persons connected with the criminal act,” Tijani said.
Allaying fears of an immediate security threat to Lagos residents, the commissioner noted that the consignment was being moved out of the state, though he acknowledged the wider national security implications.
“It does not pose any form of threat to Lagos State; they were moving out of the state. But with the trend of events in the country where we have seen bandits wear military uniforms, who knows what they wanted to do with this?” he added.
A police source close to the investigation revealed that the truck driver and his assistant were the first to be arrested. The other suspects were subsequently apprehended when they visited the police station in Surulere to claim the seized vehicle and goods.
The recovery comes amid heightened concerns by security agencies over the proliferation of military-grade uniforms among bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements across the country.
