Security forces have taken over the national secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja following a clash between rival factions locked in a growing internal power struggle.

Witnesses said heavily armed police officers were deployed to the party headquarters after tensions escalated between opposing camps laying claim to the party’s leadership and structure.

The confrontation disrupted activities at the secretariat, with supporters from both factions accusing each other of attempting to seize control ahead of critical political realignments.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the deployment, but the police presence underscores mounting concerns over instability within opposition ranks as political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections.

The latest standoff highlights widening fractures inside the SDP, a party increasingly viewed as a potential platform for emerging coalitions and dissatisfied political blocs seeking alternatives outside the ruling establishment.
