President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked conversation with an unusual remark about leadership continuity, declaring that his assumption of office was effectively a transition “from myself.”
Speaking during a meeting with the 36 state coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu framed his relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari as a close political partnership.
“I took over from myself. The late Buhari is me. He was a partner. If I took over from him, is that not from myself?” the president said.
Tinubu’s comments appeared to emphasise continuity between his administration and that of Buhari, under whom he was a key political ally and whose ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), he helped bring to power in 2015.
The remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with supporters interpreting them as a reaffirmation of policy alignment, while critics question the implications for political independence and governance direction.
The presidency has not issued further clarification on the statement.
