Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken a swipe at opposition figure Atiku Abubakar, criticising his past role in the country’s privatisation programme and questioning the outcomes of key industrial assets sold during that period.
Speaking in a pointed remark aimed at opposition coalition leaders, Tinubu said none among them is without a controversial political history, singling out Atiku’s tenure as chairman of Nigeria’s privatisation council.
“The head among them was once in charge of privatisation,” Tinubu said. “They privatised the steel industry in Delta — is it working today? They privatised Ajaokuta Steel Company — is it working today?”
The president extended his criticism beyond economic policy, making a veiled reference to internal political disputes within opposition ranks. “They even tried to privatise another man’s political party — that one refused,” he added.
Tinubu’s comments underscore ongoing political tensions ahead of future elections, as debates over economic reforms and past policy decisions continue to shape Nigeria’s political discourse.
